Finding My Heart by Queen of Spades

Hello wonderful readers! I am very happy that Author Y. Correa has allowed me to be here to discuss my newest short story offering "Finding My Heart".

Blurb:

Leopold Hawkins Threadbare is revered for his scientific genius, which has blessed him with great fortune. When the lovely Katarina is less than impressed, their disagreement spirals him into unexpected circumstances. Time is of the essence. The treasure is Leopold’s heart. The reward is his life. Discover if Leopold achieves success in Finding My Heart.

Excerpt:

“Leopold Hawkins Threadbare, in matters of the heart, you are one of the most obtuse human beings on the planet!”

Flabbergasted at her statement, I shouted. “Rina, why so salty? I thanked you for being there for me. What else do you want?”

The porter pointed at the watch, signaling the last call for passengers.

Katarina sighed. “I pray it won’t be too late by the time you figure out the answer.”

She kissed me on my right cheek. “This is farewell Leopold. For now or forever is up to you.”

With that declaration, she boarded the train. The doors closed, and the train began pulling off.

My body had a mind of its own. The clanking of my shoes against the surface of the platform. The train was not quite at maximum speed. Perhaps I could make it stop.

“Rina!” I screamed. I waved my arms, hoping to get someone’s attention. Not willing to give up, I sprinted. Still yelling Rina’s name. Still waving frantically.

A sharp pain flooded my body. My hands clutched my chest. My sprinting slowed into a walk, then to a crawl. The train gained speed, widening the distance. I’d never be able to catch up.

More pain came, paralyzing me. The act of breathing was a struggle. My throat tightened. All surroundings became fuzzy. Then distorted. Then deleted.

"Finding My Heart" is available (1) on my website (in pdf form) or (2) via All Authors Publishing House (which also offers epub and mobi, along with pdf).

Thanks for your time,

When Summer Lingers by Queen of Spades

Good day everyone! I am Queen of Spades. My main genres are poetry and contemporary fiction. Author Y. Correa has been kind enough to allow me to talk about one of my short story freebies "When Summer Lingers".

Blurb:
Dahna is quite comfortable in her role as an outcast. Her favorite activities are painting her nails and hanging out on the beach. An observation by the quirky Carr leads to an endearing friendship between two unlikely people.

firedivider

Overall, When Summer Lingers covers the tale of two individuals. Dahna is withdrawn and accustomed to being a loner. Carr is more extroverted and open to making new friends. During the summer, an important message is driven home: to treasure time and the experiences you have with others.

This free short story is available on my website as well as on the Freebies section of the All Authors Publishing House website.

Taint on Religion by Queen of Spades

Hello everyone! Queen of Spades here, dropping by Author Y. Correa's spot to talk about my earliest short story freebie "Taint on Religion".

Blurb:

Natasha was taught three things: to love God, to love herself, and to always go to church. When a sea of tragedy strikes in her youth, she strays from the path of God. Realizing the error of her ways, she seeks redemption in her adult years. Reverend Jamison and his church looks to be the answer to her prayers. Yet when things in the dark come to the light, Natasha is faced with a tough decision. Does she stay silent with her discovery or does she dare put a taint on religion?

***

With "Taint on Religion" I tackle quite a few subjects. How one processes tragedy and going down an improper path. If a church can truly be forgiving. If a person's intentions are actually pure or have an ulterior motive. The reader goes through all the motions with Natasha but that doesn't mean that each reader will have the same feelings once the story is over.

"Taint on Religion" is available on my website or the Freebies section of All Authors Publishing House.

Thanks for having me.

"Concordant Vibrancy 4: Inferno" Cover Reveal

Today the members of the All Authors Family are celebrating the cover reveal of "Concordant Vibrancy 4: Inferno", the fourth installation of the Concordant Vibrancy anthology collection.

First, the blurb ...

There is a universal fascination associated with passion―its defining element, fire, as well as the unseen. Yet how many dare to trespass beyond the final product, exploring the ingredients which keep it sustainable?

This is the traverse of the fourth installment of the Concordant Vibrancy collection, presented by All Authors Publications and Promotions, entitled “Inferno”. Nine phenomenal talents diverge under one purpose: the creation of literary works guaranteed to set the mind, heart, and spirit ablaze.

Stories included:
Express-Oh” by Adonis Mann

Not Always Like This” by Carol Cassada

The Fireman” by Harmony Kent

The Complications of Fire” by Beem Weeks

Calliope’s Inferno” by C. Desert Rose

Moxy” by Y. Correa

Antipode” by Synful Desire

The Chronicles of Aidan” by Da’Kharta Rising, and

The Calefaction of Insight” by Queen of Spades.

Since January 2015 All Authors Publishing House has been exploring the elements of nature through the enterprise known as Concordant Vibrancy, an All Authors Anthology Collection.

Book One explored Unity under the theme question of "What elements contribute to the concept of unity?" The element being Earth. Through an array of tales, the authors explained what Unity meant to them.

Book Two examined Vitality. The theme question was, "What force drives your spirit?" The element was Air. Here the authors endeavored to answer the question with a combination of stories and essays.

Book Three looked at Lustrate using the theme question, "What embodies the composition of fluidity?" The element was water. Herein the authors spoke lucidly and clearly on what fluidity meant to them.

Book Four takes a peek at Inferno ... the element of Fire. It asks "What are the ingredients to a sustainable blaze?" By far the best of the collection, "Concordant Vibrancy 4: Inferno" is a demonstration of depth in thought and evolution in craft.

Now, without further ado and with great pride All Authors brings you the cover of "Concordant Vibrancy 4: Inferno".

The Arithmetic of Life

As most of you guys probably already know, Queen of Spades and I are like 2 peas in a pod. I am the President of All Authors and she is the Vice President. For the Pleasure Prints Blog tour, I found it fitting for her to get her "real talk" on. So, here you have it ... Queen of Spades!

Hello to all,

Today I am taking a small break from being Queen of Spades the author because in order to discuss this particular topic, I must serve as Monica the Architect.

For those of you who didn’t know, I am the half-brain behind the “Concordant Vibrancy” concept and the full brain behind the birth of “Divergent Ink”. I am going to focus on Divergent Ink, but I actually apply this method to both collections.

A few weeks back, all the participants in the Pleasure Prints blog tour were discussing dates and specifics. One of the authors asked me:

How do you determine the order of writings in the collection?

To outsiders, it does seem random. I don’t go from shortest to longest or longest to shortest. I don’t go in alphabetical order via title or alphabetical order via author. Yet, there is a science to the process.

The formula I use to set the order of writings is “The Arithmetic of Life”.

“The Arithmetic of Life” mark the ups and downs of life. It’s like waves. One moment, all could be smooth sailing. The next, you are experience high tide, fighting to stay alive.

I go into the planning as a reader, absorbing each story and the way certain characters and situations make me feel. I take into account the lingering effects as well. Am I left wondering? Am I left inspired? Am I left shaking my head?

Sometimes, there’s even a type of music playing inside my head. For the more intense scenes, a bit of opera, maybe hip hop. For lighter scenes or happily ever after, some rhythm and blues or a light piano.

When I’m in “reader” mode, I’m not doing any editing or making suggestions. I stay in my role.

After reading each story, I explore the number of stories as well as how many fit one set of emotions versus another.

For Pleasure Prints, the feel is from “whimsical” to “coming full circle”.

If there is a situation where more than one story produces similar feelings or resolutions, then other factors come into play like length and the author’s names. So far, the times I’ve encountered that have been minimal.

See, there was no algebra involved. Just symmetry of psychology and the actions therein.

Hope you enjoyed this backstage pass into my process.

Peace.

Terror Times Two: Peter Blade and R.I.P.(E). Joint Release

Hello, everyone! Ova View here!

Let me start by saying HAPPY HALLOWEEN! I’m all dressed up and ready to go! Woot!

Welcome to the Joint Release of “Peter Blade” by Y. Correa and “R.I.P.(E).” by Queen of Spades.

It’s been a while since we’ve brought you a book release that we’ve been this excited about. So, without further ado, we’ll get right into it.

I have got to say that I am super stoked to bring your this one on one interview with the duo now known as “Hybrid Seductions”. That is to say, Queen of Spades, the Antiquated Hybrid and Y. Correa, the Literary Seductress. A round of applause is definitely in order!

It’s been a while since I’ve been out and on the hunt for a good read and some interaction with my fellow bookish folk, so I can’t tell you how excited I am to have come across this lovely Dual Release. Let’s hop right into it, shall we?

First, let’s talk a little bit about what prompted to writing of each book.

Y. Correa, what was it that incited the writing of “Peter Blade”?

Wow, great question!

“Peter Blade” came from both a song and a story that my dad told me when I was a kid.

When I was a kid there was a release of a salsa song called “Pedro Navajas” which translated to Peter Blade. The song talked about a true story of a serial killer that hunted prostitutes and eventually was killed by one. What the song does not talk about was the reasons or the intricate details of the events. So, one day out of curiosity I asked my dad about it. He went on to tell me the long story about a serial killer in Puerto Rico that was hell bent on ridding the world of prostitutes because he found them dirty.

One day, already an adult, while cleaning my kitchen I heard the song for the gazillionth time and immediately my mind started swirling with ideas of who Peter Blade was, why he killed, what the essence of his character was. And, before I knew it, I was in the midst of writing a story based on SOME “true events” but mostly a work of fiction.

At one point I’d asked a fellow author to help me with the story—make it a collaborative work, if you will. However, in time I came to realize that that would not pan out so I opted to go forward with the story by myself. What I did not know what that Peter was actually the force behind the wheel. It really was the character that narrated to the story. Every labyrinthine detail was dictated to me by the main character. In the end the story turned out to be a look into the psychopathy of a killer. Terror of the mind.

Amazing! Thank you, Y. Queen, could you please tell us a little bit about “R.I.P.(E).”? Perhaps, what the meaning of the acronym as well …?

Where to begin … where to begin? I have been on a bit of a hiatus. I haven’t done an individual project since Life-O-Suction and the last appearance I made in a collection was Concordant Vibrancy 3. Truth be told, I wasn’t even 100% betting on putting out anything this year.

I have gone through quite a few things since my last publication. Life was keeping me busy. Then I encountered someone whose presence made quite an impact and challenged some of my cautionary approaches towards certain topics. Just as I was reaching my level of comfort, a tragedy happened, putting me back at … square one.

One night, I had a dream, filled with visions I couldn’t shake. It also included phrases and numbers that lingered. Most of the phrases represent titles of the poems. The primary things in the visions developed the cover concept. The numbers link to a bit of perception and symbolism: mostly behind the number 13. These were indeed “Random Inspirations on Paper (R.I.P.)”.

The “E” was added as an afterthought but necessary. It represented my evolution after everything with this person had taken place. However, because of the work’s presentation as a modern day Adam and Eve, I morphed the “E” into (E)ve-olution.

Hence … R.I.P.(E).

Fantastic, Queen! You never cease to amaze me with the way your mind works!

But, here is the primary question … Why a double release? What was it that made you both decide to come together and not only bring these books to the public in conjunction, but also dub it a “Hybrid Seductions” collaborative? I am super intrigued. Y., would you like to go first?

Sure.

Well, you see … the thing is that Queen and I are very alike in a lot of ways. While I am known as the “Literary Seductress” I feel like that title can easily fit her as well. And, although she sees herself as the “Antiquated Hybrid”, I feel like I can also fit into that category. We both have a very similar approach to writing:

It must be worth reading, it must be a work of art and it must be captivating.

So, after lots of conversation we came up with a label that encompassed us both; “Hybrid Seductions”.

Now, I will let Queen elaborate on the dual release part. Queen, after you.

It goes a bit deeper than “Hybrid Seductions”. Y was going to release hers on October 31st anyway. Yet, when I was thinking of my release date, it was tied in to the skull and the “Day of the Dead” symbolism, which led to 10/31 as well. The idea was as random as R.I.P.(E). Y was the first to suggest doing it jointly but for me, there had to be a tie-in for us to do it together. Peter Blade rang to me as “terror of the mind” while my work depicted “terror of the heart” which is what the elements of heartbreak essentially are. Once all was connected, it made sense for both to be released together.

Y. here again. Also, when we looked further into the works one thing in Peter Blade stood out like a sore thumb … At the end of the day, Peter was “Peter Blade” because he first experienced “terror of the heart”. Then, boom! Just like that it all made sense to me. In my mind, heartbreak has repercussions that changes a person—some for the better and some for the worse. Peter was the prime example of how it changes you for the worse. Okay … I am done. Queen, the floor is yours. 😁

Well, after the meshing of “terror”, we thought it fitting to come out with advertising as well as a book trailer that featured both of our books. Who knows? Perhaps it will lead to one book with both of our writing styles in the future.

Sounds like a dream come true to me! Of course, that’s just my humble opinion. You ladies never fail to leave me transfixed with how your minds work. Both independently and collectively. Here is a great question, and it’ll be my last before we go into the logistics of the books … If you would describe your books with one word, what would that be? Queen, you first.

Eve-olution. 😄

HA! Great one! 😃 Okay, Y., now you …

Psychopathy.

Well people, remember you heard it here first! From Ova to you … Hybrid Seductions. Now it is time for some actual release information. Ladies and gents, I present you with book covers, blurbs, links and trailers. Enjoy!

Interview with Queen of Spades: On "Spaded Truths 2"

Greetings Reader, Writers and Precious Patrons.

Today I have a special treat.

Today, Author Queen of Spades will be visiting us in the form of an interview that I did with her about her upcoming release, "Spaded Truths 2: Life-O-Suction".

2015lifeosuctionBy

queenEnjoy!

  1. Could you please tell us why you believe that putting together a controversial poetry collection is so important in today's society? Please expand on your answer.

I don’t think the controversial aspect is necessarily the most important part but the ability to present content that makes a person think. Although the advancement of the Internet and the incorporation of Social Media has made it possible to get information to people at lightning speed, the downfall is that in more instances than not, there is a failure to fact check or to even wait for the full story. As a result, there are some people that treat gossip as gospel, as well as people who don’t delve to go deeper than what is drudged up via Google basic search or Wikipedia. This marks a missed opportunity to engage critical analysis and to come out becoming more evolved in the end. In order to be noticed, one has to do something that has shock value, for the world has become highly desensitized to many actions. Too many things that would have sparked outraged have become part of the everyday fabric of existing. So, controversy brings the person to the table, if you will, but the content has to make the person stay.

  1. Give the choice between writing a poetry collection that some might find contentious and writing a poetry collection that may draw in a bigger crowd, which would you choose and why?

I actually choose authenticity, which has the ability to produce both types of poetry collections. No, it isn’t quite the answer your audience was looking for but it’s the most truthful.

  1. Everyone has hard times and/or dark moments in life. How do you believe that "Spaded Truths 2: Life-O-Suction" addresses those issues and why do you think it's important?

Spaded Truths 2: Life-O-Suction put a spotlight on awareness—episodes that can drain the human condition. This is slightly different from Spaded Truths: Themes and Proclamations where I had my thoughts and addressed those thoughts using my poetry.

The awareness presented in Spaded Truths 2: Life-O-Suction is important because it keeps that universal feel intact, even if the delivery of some of the content is a bit heated.

  1. Could you please tell us a little bit about the message that you were trying to convey on the cover of "Spaded Truths 2", and do you believe that the graphic artist did a good job in creating what you were looking for?

Since Spaded Truths 2 was steering in a more personal direction, in the sense of dealing with internal chaos, as opposed to external reflections, I had to come up with imagery to represent this transition. However, I didn’t want the concept to steer too far from the abstractness of the 1st Spaded Truths, Themes and Proclamations. The graphic artist did a great job at mimicking the feel of the first one while conveying how certain revelations and travesties to tear on the heartbeat of life’s vibrancy.

  1. What is the single most important thing that you'd like to accomplish with the release of "Spaded Truths 2"? Please expand on your answer.

In short, a multitude of reactions: from “I get it” to “No, she didn’t just say that” to “This just makes me uncomfortable”. The purpose is some sort of feeling, any feeling.

Waves To Light: Book Blog Tour

banner

Hello and Welcome to the Waves To Light Blog Tour!

Today my special guests are Author/Poet MJ Holman and Author/Poet Queen of Spades.

25889233

In celebration of this amazing poetry collection, its release and blog tour, I asked the authors 2 questions. They were:

If there was 1 (one) important message you could deliver through the prose and poetry of Waves ToLight, what would that be and why?

Do you think a person not battling with mental illness could connect to the significance of this collection? If not, please explain. If so, please elaborate.

To Question 1:

15419711

Queen of Spades Said:

The most important message is that one is not alone. Since there are so many images that paint mental illness negatively, it is important for others to know that a sufferer could have the look or what society considers a "normal" person. With my particular classification (clinical depression or major depressive disorder), one also has different levels of functionality. Some individuals are low functioning, meaning that at the lowest of their depression, it can impact one's day-to-day activities. It can impact job performance, even the ability to keep a job, along with being fully present in the lives of friends and others. However, there are also people who are medium to high functioning, even to the point where the closest of friends may not realize when they are in the midst of a depressive episode.

Speaking for myself, I am more towards the high functioning spectrum. When I am in a depressive state, I tend to internalize and isolate yet because I'm hypersensitive to external perception, I can give the illusion that I'm "just fine" or "okay". The danger with being on this end is when I finally remove the mask (aka playing the role for the public), the feelings associated with my depression are intense. It is not uncommon for my intensity to manifest via physical ailments, like migraines, loss of appetite, and muscle aches and spasms, particularly around my shoulder area and the small of my back, where my stress tends to reside.

MJ Logo

MJ Holman Said:

I will echo Queen of Spades and say the message is one does not suffer alone. The condition may be relative and we may all experience different aspects of it, have different symptoms and causes, but at the nub, all things are equal.

It is important that the language of depression and hypomania can be shared. This is our way of communicating to each other the extent of the illness, the depth of feeling, and giving a voice to all those who cannot express themselves when faced with these conditions.

To Question 2:

15419711

Queen of Spades Said:

I think another person definitely could. There might be moments when one is feeling very sad, confused, or lost, and every person has felt that at some time or another. In addition, for those friends or loved ones who know a person suffering from a mental illness, this could give some type of clarity and understanding into that person's battle. Usually, one from the outside looking in tends to blame himself. Even worse, there are quite a few individuals that just wants the sufferer to simply "snap out of it". I hope through this collection, that realization sets in. For a loved one who cares, it is not his or her fault. For the critic, mental illness is not a thing one "snaps out of".

For me, I don't see this as something that miraculously gets cured. I live with it and just pray I see more darkness thatlight, along with hoping others will achieve that as well.

MJ Logo

 MJ Holman Said:

I would like to think so. We all suffer the same emotional duress from time to time, mostly associated with grief. At its very limit, grief will follow the same pattern as an episode of depression and there will be lines of poetry in this collection that may illustrate those feelings exactly.

Individuals who spend their time with sufferers, whether they are friends or loved ones will recognise them in this poetry. They will see the depths we plummet or the elation we cannot control and it will bring to them a greater understanding of the illness. My mother only recently read The Sea of Conscience, afterwards she came to me and said, 'I had no idea you felt this way.' That's what we're aiming for with Waves to Light.
