"The Look" of Abuse

group_of_women.sflb.ashx

Today, I had an unprecedented experience.

But in order to get to that, I must first rewind and tell you a little bit about myself.

It is funny how some things seem to work in synchronization.

Early this month I was wanting to talk a little bit about my past and how I suffered at the hands of Domestic Violence. Mostly because this is Domestic Violence awareness month. The thing was that I wasn't sure what to say or how to say it.

What happened today was the catalyst to my being able to express what I wanted to in the first place.

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

For 11 years I suffered, in silence, at the hands of Domestic Violence.

I lived with, and eventually married, a man that was abusive; mentally, emotionally and physically. He broke me down to a point where I was no longer able to recognize myself.

This was made worse by the fact that he was an MP (Military Policeman), so even if I wanted to complain to the authorities, I really had nowhere to turn. He had convinced his fellow soldiers that he was the prime example of a loving, caring and giving husband, but in all actuality, he was anything but.

The abuse started off verbally. He'd call me names, tell me how little I was worth, how ugly and fat I was, and how my family sucked too, so he was the best thing that had ever happened to me.

When it got to the point where he thought his words were ineffective, he started playing mental-emotional games with me. He'd tell me things like "So-and-so wants me. She thinks I'm hot and wants to have sex with me. Look at what you'll lose if you don't do what I tell you to do." Not exactly in those words, of course, but along those lines.

Eventually, my best was not enough. If he came home from work and saw so much as one dish in the sink he would flip shit. He'd start throwing things, yelling, pushing me and the kids around, calling us names, until things escalated to hitting me.

I worked a full-time job, had 4 kids (one disabled), 4 pets and kept my home in immaculate condition, mind you. All he did was come home from work and do absolutely nothing but get drunk off his ass.

In time, the abuse had grown to an irreparable level. The culmination of it was a treacherous encounter of a gun being waved in me, my daughter, my son's faces. All while threatening us that he would "kill us if he found out that we were doing him wrong".

It was on that day .... at that very moment, that I fled with my kids, the clothes on our backs and a clunky station wagon that scarcely had her barings.

I! LOST! EVERYTHING!

man-crying1

To add insult to injury, I was NEVER able to get counseling for the trauma I endured. Never. I could not afford it. So, I silently suffered the onslaught of emotions that came from the entire fiasco—and trust me when I tell you that there was a lot! Mostly, because my family simply did not understand, my children needed my support, and I had to press on, move on, no matter how much I was dying inside.

Fast forward 8 years later, and I've recently realized how I am still suffering from the unhealed mental-emotional scars that the abuse left behind. Scars that never got treated, and in some way, have spiritually rotted and grown infectious. Festered from the time spent open and oozing.

Every day I see how I involuntarily react to things very much in the way that untreated survivors of Domestic Violence would react. I promise you that it's not on purpose.

As a matter of fact, most people don't even realize it. Of course, I'm not the type to go around telling everyone my business. I never have been. So, only those who know me intimately well can tell.

Recently, a good friend of mine got out of an abusive relationship. After talking with her about it for hours, together we decided to seek "support" in places that could help us cope or deal with the trauma.

today

That brings us to today.

After speaking about it, in depth, she and I agreed to go to a place that offered group therapy as well as one on one therapy. I decided that maybe I should do the group therapy and that maybe one on one was best for her. Nevertheless, we decided that whatever we would do, we'd do it together so as to continually support one another.

We arrived at the place, and while she was inside talking to someone, I waited for her in the waiting room as I was too late for group. So there I sat with my son in tow, chatting  and smiling at him.

Suddenly, while I waited, I decided that I wanted to ask a question for future reference. So I walked up to the receptionist and said, "I have a question: I know that you have group therapy, and I'm interested in attending the next one should I make it on time. However, my son is developmentally disabled and I am wondering if you have a child care program catered to that, because if not I'd have to find an alternative."

She looked at me dead in the eyes and said, "Well, we wouldn't be able to help you, because we only help women whom suffer or have suffered of Domestic Violence."

There was such emphasis put on the words "we wouldn't be able to help you". As if to say, "What the heck do you want the help for, with your smiles and the playing with your kid? You need to be broken and beaten for us to help you!"

I couldn't help the words that followed. I looked at her in the eyes and said "What makes you think that I haven't?!" Her eyes damn near fell out of her head. She didn't know what to do with herself. She had no words.

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

My point ...?

No matter how often it's been said, PEOPLE STILL JUDGE A BOOK BY IT'S COVER!

If I am to go by what the girl said, then "I don't look like I am or have been abused." Since when does abuse have a look, a social status or even an ethnic group? There are a wide array of individuals that have been and/or continue to be abused. And those lucky enough to have gotten out alive, like me, may still be suffering from the ramifications of what trauma was left behind.

Queen of Spades said it best in her article "Testimony of Terror".

I say that to say this ... just because I'm smiling doesn't mean a thing. Clowns smile all the time, even when their pain runs deep.

Think about it.

Profound Thoughts

For as long as I can remember I've been fascinated with preternatural things. But, it's always been more than that. Not only was I always attracted to the unusual and obscure, but I've always had an irrevocable affinity for the forces that unify our existence on a universal scale.

Perhaps, it's been my desire to find meaning in life. Perhaps, my inability to accept the monotonous and mundane as my unrepealable continuance. I've always wanted there to be something more to life, something extraordinary.

If I were to be completely honest, I've yet to find it. This, of course, does not take away from the fact that I've had some inexplicable experiences in my life; none that I care to share at this moment. However, I suppose that some part of me is unsatisfied with the "every day".

So, what do I do? I look to science, mythology, history and even ancient alien theory (just to mention some) for the answers to the ocean of unanswered questions that float daily in my mind.

And yet, I'm in a continual conundrum.  Why? Well, because the more I dig, the more I ask. The more question I ask, the more unsatisfied I become with my diurnal routine. It's like a never ending cycle yet to be abated by whatever discoveries I make.

It's funny because often times I find myself in a position where I am the encyclopedia of random information amongst my friends and family. Truth be told, I enjoy imparting what knowledge I've learned. Yet, with every tidbit I render unto others, I find myself inquiring more of the universe. Yearning for more knowledge and desiring more insight.

Here is what makes it worse for me ...

I am an average, everyday, uneventful person. Like 80% of the residents of planet earth, I get up every morning and practice the routine mandates of a mother and person. My life isn't fantastic by any means. I still experience want, need, pain and boredom. I still go through the emotions, lethargies and felicities of human existence. I'm no different than you, I'm sure.

So I wonder, is it wrong to want more? Is it wrong to hunger for a bounty of adventure? Is it wrong to covet the expedition of an undiscovered and mysterious enterprise? I wonder, because I realize that in longing for more, I'm just leaving myself open to disillusion on a constant basis. Is it right, fair even, to do that to myself.

I, often times, wish I could be like Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking, whom were/are masters at mind experiments. They can/could traverse the universe with a single thought, and visit other planets, other species, other worlds. What I wouldn't do to be able to do that.

Other times, I find myself longing to be among the few that HAVE mounted and aircraft and traveled into outer space. Of course, life has dealt me another deck of cards altogether. One which makes me ponder the fact that perhaps I've been cheated somehow. Outsmarted.

On the other side of the token is the fact that I feel guilty for craving such things. I feel blameworthy because I want, I desire, and I long to go places none have gone, to do things that none have done, to expedience things that none have experienced. But is that right, being that I have a child that depends on me for everything? Does that make me a bad mother or person? I couldn't tell you.

Today, I awoke in an introspective mood, considering all things in life; all the facets of it. My past choices, my current struggles, my future and where it might lead. And I wonder, will it always be this way with me? Will I always be the adventurer trapped in the life of the introvert?

I suppose the right question is:

Will I ever be content?

Me, controversial? * shocked face *

ShockedFace

No, I lie.

I'm not surprised.

I am highly controversial at times.

truth

Suffice it to say that I'm not very surprised that some people deem me controversial. Particularly, when it comes to my writing ventures.

Some time ago I was asked:

"Do you think that any of your sci-fi mashups stir up controversy? If so, which ones and in what way?"

Simple answer? Yes, all of them to one degree or another.

Not so simple answer?

hand-extended

I think the best plan of action today would be to address just one of them—the most dynamic one—my pride and joy.

The story of mine that is pretty heavy in the Controversy Department isn't even published yet. As a matter of fact, I've been trying to write it for a few years now and haven't even completed it. But, I'm perfectly okay with that as the story is replete with a tangled web of information. So much in fact, that my mind looks a little something like this when I think about it:

Untitled

And that's ↑ an understatement!

I mean the amount of thoughts that cross my mind due to the complexity of this story is a kin to having Steven Moffat, Stephen King and Stephen Hawking (Side Note: I didn't realize that I had that many Steve's that I looked up to. LOL) inside of my head all at the same time.

(Other Side Note: THAT would be a dream come true to me! #LoveMeSomeSteves)

You know what? I just realized that I haven't even shared the title of the work with you all. Just goes to show how complex the story is. LOL :D

It is "Genesis Ellipse ...".

So, let me tell you a little bit about the controversial aspect of it.

ready

Reason Number One

Religion, religion!

As most of you know I was brought up Wester Christian. "Genesis Ellipse ..." bends the basic fundamentals of that which I was taught to accept and uphold. It plays with the concept that all religions are tied into one another and that some of the information in the Bible has either been misconstrued somehow or is blatantly incorrect altogether.

Needless to say, the church in which I was brought up might not be very happy with my interpretation of the story.

Reason Number Two

Is science really fact or merely the translation/perception we get from an altered reality?

I toy with the idea that science as we know it today may stem from religion and may even be incorrect as a whole.

Well, those hardcore science buffs may not be all too happy with that.

Reason Number Three

"What If" is the name of the game.

I've come to realize that most readers today want everything spelled out for them. In "Genesis Ellipse ..." the reader is basically forced to use his/her imagination. Many times to "fill in the blanks". And do you know what? That's exactly the point.

So, I can almost promise you that this won't make some readers too happy.

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

In a nutshell, "Genesis Ellipse ..." will be so different, to so many, that it'll more than likely stir up all sorts of whispers and controversy.

With that being said, here is a taste of "Genesis Ellipse ..." my current Work In Progress.

EXCERPT!

The Genesis of Time

Heaven

“I am truly sorry Ish,” Michael said with a sympathetic frown, then turned to Isha and with an empathic nod, finished, “Isha.”

“But, why Michael?” Ish questioned, heartbroken, “We did the best we could after our mistake. We tried, worked hard, were faithful ... TO HIM ... and to each other!”

“'Tis not my position to offer explanations or excuses. It is merely to be done.” Michael responded, not knowing what else to tell them, all the while knowing that their hearts were grieving.

“Michael, please? I beg of you, speak to Him. Have Him understand our position. I beg!” Isha continued.

“I cannot!” He finally said, firmly. “Every choice, bad or good, has its ramifications. In your case, your choice was the worst of all. You chose death, over HIM! The life you lived on earth is not nearly enough penalty to pay back your deception. This, is now your punishment!” Coldly he spoke, having ultimately reached his peak of mercy.

An eternity? An infinity of time apart? Jumping back and forth in time, never able to be together? Having no memory of each other, having to always and forever, feel the gap of emptiness and solitude? Not having love, not having each other? THAT, was their price to pay?

How could The Eternal call this fair justice?

What justice was there in this punishment? What clemency? He called Himself the All Merciful, yet cast this chastisement on them, KNOWING that they could not live without each other. Just as HE, Himself, had created them to live!

Oh, how they pained at the revelation of their misfortune to come. How, they hurt inside. They couldn't fathom it! More than that, they simply could not except it!

They held each other, finding solace in one another's arms—consolation and security. In the safety of their lovers embrace they stayed for a few moments following. Isha began to sob. Ish, tried to remain strong.

Then, they felt themselves being pulled apart. The oddity was not that they were being pulled apart by an invisible force. No. The oddity was that as they were drifting from each other, yet within one another's hands remained the pulsing everlasting heart of the other. Red, gleaming like a ruby on fire. Beating with life and force.

Ish, had Isha's spirit heart in his hand and Isha, had his. Then, just like that, they were gone from one another's side.

Oh, but what little would they truly know about their fated future...

Two Questions ...

peter capaldi

Question Number 1:

Do you think that any of your sci-fi mashups stir up controversy? If so, which ones and in what way?

Question Number 2:

As one who was brought up in the church but no longer practices its teachings, what would you say to others who believe your style of writing and topics is blasphemous?

answer

Quick Answers:

Yes, and chill the heck out!

Of course, I'll elaborate a little. LOL. :D :P

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

I am currently working on a story that will break the barriers of many different genres. A story so complicated that at times I wonder if I'll even be able to execute it properly.

Imagine this:

Time Travel (Chrononaut Science) mixed with Quantum Physics, mixed with Biblical History and Religious Mythology, mixed with Romance and Adventure, oh and a side of Chick-Lit just to keep things interesting.

WHAT A COCKTAIL!

Molekularcocktail

As a matter of fact, today I was wondering this ...

Screenshot_2015-08-18-15-07-30-1

However, before I stray too far away from the questions, let me do a "U-ie" and actually answer them. LOL

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

I am not completely certain if my current works stir up controversy, but I am 100% positive that "Genesis Ellipse ..." will.

I am entirely sure that people will feel some sort of way about it; be that good or bad. And you know what? I'm absolutely fine with that.

You see "Genesis Ellipse ..." plays with the concept of the one thing that humanity reveres the most: religion. The thing is that it not only fools around with Judeo-Christian belief, but Buddhist, Islamic and Muslim ideas as well.

Of course, I did not choose to do this to offend anyone, but rather to showcase the thread that ties each religion—God.

What "Genesis Ellipse ..." does is tinker with the idea of religion and science meeting hand and hand, and not in the way that most perceive it today, but in a way that indicates that all religions are tied together, and all of them stem from a single source. Moreover, it uses Science Fact and Science Fiction to prove that point.

I honestly believe that the story transcends the concept of story telling and dabbles with the perceptions of faith, love and the human condition.

There have been instances in which people have asked me about the title. They can't quite understand why there is an ellipses after the word Ellipse.

The Answer?

The title has a profound meaning.

Here they are per the Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online & Google.

Genesis: the origin or coming into being of something.

Ellipse: a circle. A Circle: The circle means universal, sacred and divine. It represents the infinite nature of the universe. Basically, the Ellipse represents a never ending cycle.

(Ellipsis) "...": an unfinished thought of sentence. An incomplete thought, left open to interpretation.

WhatDoesThatMeanIt means this:

The beginning of an innumerable, infinite cycle of occurrence that is unfinished.

Yet ... there is more.

The Genesis part of the title refers to the two main characters: Adam & Eve.

ba4fd7cb8bd5397c35c2a07a7ddddb69

The Ellipse refers to Basic Quantum Mechanics Theory.

2000px-Sommerfeld_ellipses.svg

Quantum mechanics is the science of the very small: the body of scientific principles that explains the behaviour of matter and its interactions with energy on the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. This ties into the Chrononaut aspect of the story.

Finally the "... (ellipsis)"

ellipsis_bgcrop1This is indicative of the omission of information. Perhaps, we weren't being told the entire story, perhaps, someone just filled in the balnks and got it wrong.

Meaning that we don't know what the true story is, or where it's headed.

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

The entire concept of the story is bound to make some heads turn and some people frown. Especially those in the church—any church! Even more so, the one I grew up in.

I grew up in a church that EVERYTHING was sin and blasphemy. From a female shaving her legs to a man wearing short pants.

However, I am not concerned about the possible backlash of angry fanatics. I'm not worried about my story creating controversy, because that was something I knew was going to happen from the beginning.

What I would say to those whom want to create an uproar about a story that they cannot understand, is "Relax, it's JUST a story! I never said that I actually believe it."

yellow_face_wink

I can honestly say that I have a feeling, deep down inside that "Genesis Ellipse ..."—should I execute it properly—will be my masterpiece. I'd be surprised if I ever write anything better.

Looking At Things A Bit Deeper

It's amazing what a good promotion can do for the numbers on your book. Yet, "numbers" do not always translate into sales.

It leaves one, in all of its crooked glory, with the proverbial ...

"Rock and a Hard Place"

Situation.

banging head

Today, I want to share with you all my experience during last week's promotion for "MarcoAntonio & Amaryllis".

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

The BIGGEST complaint in the Indie Author world is "lack of sales".

bad sales

Second only to "I can't get any reviews".

You see, everyone sees to know the mathematical equation:

Finished Book + Great Cover + Great Reviews

=

Sales, sales, sales!

Now, what if I were to tell you that that's not always the case?

insane

"Insane" you say?

Sure is, isn't it?

nodding

It had been some time since I'd put "MarcoAntonio & Amaryllis" on any type of sale or promotion. Realizing this, I opted to do a 5 day freebie last week, as there hadn't been any movement on it for quite some time sales wise.

Now, during the time of the promo some things happened which caused me to change the books cover. If you don't follow my blog frequently you can read about it HERE.

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

So, I did all of that, and this is how things panned out.

  • Since January 2015 I hadn't had a single sale. Not even a "sample" read. :( *long sigh*

  • I put the book on Promo starting on Wednesday July 22nd, and ending on Sunday July 26th.

Please, take a look at these numbers.

Day 1: 146 Downloads

Day 2: 72 Downloads

Day 3: *Side Note: This was the day that the new cover went live online.* 13 Downloads

Day 4: 21 Downloads

Day 5: 24 Downloads

Giving me a grand total of: 276 Downloads

This drastic change in numbers during a 5 day period resulted in my book hitting Number 2 in one category (Spanish/Hispanic Fiction) and Number 3 in another (Historical Romance).

Now, as good as it felt to fly among the "Best Sellers" ranks, at the same time, I was kind of let down.

Why? Well, because THIS was, in all of its crooked glory, the proverbial ...

Catch 22

Again ...

banging head

For those of you who do not know what a "Catch 22" is, it is a "moral/emotional or circumstantial dilemma or difficultly from which there is no escaping because of mutual, intertwined and/or dependent conflicting conditions".

Here are the reasons why:

Question and Observation #1:

Was it moral, honorable or ethical to be among the Top 5 when my book was being given away for free during a promotional week? I honestly didn't know. I mean, I did sort of earn it after all. But, did I earn it on noble terms? I have no answer for that.

Question & Observation #2:

While I, and the people which had already read my book, knew that I deserved that position, the people that were downloading it just because it was free didn't. Dose that mean the Top 5 position didn't count? People will take anything if it is being given away.

Question & Observation #3:

Will my book ONLY EVER get downloaded, looked at and/or read when it's being given away? If so, then what's the point in trying to sell it at all? I can just leave it free all the time and stay basking with the Top Dogs.

But, is that fair to my book, my talent and myself? I mean, I WORKED HARDER THAN SHIT to make my book all that it could be. I deserve to get paid for it.

Yet, what's the point in having a price point, if no one is going to buy it anyway. For that, I should just take it off of the market. I rather it NOT be available, than it be out in the cyber-world yet I'm continually duped out of my due earnings.

So, how does one resolve that? I just don't know.

Question and Observation #4:

Did the change in cover actually produce more sales? If I were to make my judgement solely by the "sales/downloads", I'd have to say no. It surely didn't. As a matter of fact, the downloads dropped significantly.

It makes one wonder why. Was it because people did not recognize my book because the cover was so drastically different? Shoot, who is to say!

Yet, if I were to look at the grey area, I could in some way say, "Well, IT WAS the 3rd day of the promo. I can't really expect to have a lot of downloads by that point." It is a logical assumption after all.

But, is it true? Well, shit if I know.

My Conclusion.

So let's practice a bit of the Science of Deduction here.

sherlock

In looking at all of the available proof, I would have to deduce the following—which, in no certain terms, also seems to be the bottom line.

...

It does not matter how talented you are, how much hard work you've put into something, how much you deserve it, how great your cover is, or how fantastic other people think your works are. You will not make a sale unless you are attached to the right group of people.

A person such as myself can only ever hope to have his/her book looked it IF, and only IF, it is free.

So this begs the question:

Is it worth all of the hard work and unequivocal effort?

As for me, sometimes I wonder.

Yet another session of Q&A with Y. Correa

helloI couldn't resist. I had to put The Doctor there.

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

Before I get into this blog post ...

So, how are y'all feeling about my new layout? I actually like it. For some time now I'd been struggling with a layout/theme that said "Y. Correa" and hadn't been able to find the perfect one. Now, I'm not saying this one is perfect, but I am saying that it'll do for now. LOL.

WOOT!

*High 5!*

high 5

And, on that note ...

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

So, I was asked the following question, which I thought was a very good one.

"Are you more patient in your reviewing capacity than in your author capacity when it comes to conflict that is slow to fruition?"

That right there was a pretty interesting question, so I feel obliged to answer it.

I suppose, I can give you the quick answer which is no. However, I'm certain that that won't suffice. Therefore, I will indulge you all in the long answer.

long answerAnyone who knows me, knows that I don't have very much patience to begin with ... with the exception, of course, for inevitable things. Like making a proper meal, or doing laundry, or waiting for the dog to poo while I'm holding his leash, or with children.

Well, at least for the most part, unless he/she is a spoiled brat, in which case there is little to no patience to be had.

That being said, I find that every book has a tempo. I call it "The Books Rhythm and Music".

magic-book

Musically speaking, I find that every book can fall within its own musical category. There are so many ...

Classical

Jazz

Retro: 60's, 70's & 80's

Funk

Pop

And tons more.

As with any music, I find that any diversion in the tempo will hinder the flow of the song altogether. Have you ever put on your favorite record/cd and a bit into the song it skips thus throwing off the beat completely?

I find that this is very much how a book should work.

I wouldn't expect a Romance, for example, to have the same cadence as a Historical Fiction. Nor would I assume that an Urban Fiction would have to have the same momentum as a Horror. That's just being unrealistic.

I do however, believe and expect for every book to flow at the rhythm of its music.

Have you ever been to music class and had the music teach tell you to clap your hands before the music has started?

He/she indicated the beats per second that they want you to clap to. Sometimes it's something as simple as a "1 beat". That is to say "Clap ... clap ... clap ..." and so on.

Other times they may have you clap to a "1, 2 beat". That is something like "Clap ... clap, clap ... clap".

clappinghandsEvery now and again, there will be that one student in the class whose musical ear is liken to a mule playing a piano. Everyone is on the "1, 2 beat" and Marlow Mule is on "beats 4, 5 & 6".

Just ...

Nope_avi_high_resolution_by_wango911-d4jv1vx

Poor Marlow, it's not his fault, he was simply not bestowed the gift of a benevolent beat. And so, in that aspect it is what it is. However, you won't see Marlow later on in life looking for a record deal.

Ehem ...

34d006f321f50dfe304a464ef11cce09I may have veered off topic there for a second.

Let me get back to what I was saying.

bronze_beaded_divider___design_png_by_jssanda-d6arcln

So, getting back to what I was saying ...

I am a bit impatient when it comes to a book getting to the heart of the conflict, but ONLY IF that book has fallen from it's tempo.

Usually, one can tell by the 3rd chapter of a book how slow or fast it will be.

Let's say for example that I've picked up a book whose pace is slow, I expect the entire book to remain that way. Yet, if it started off fast and strong and suddenly dropped speed, at that moment I'm wanting to fling said book across the room.

There's nothing worse than a book that lost its song!

I hold true to this philosophy/frame of mind when it comes to my books as well. I want my readers to bask in the music—the art of storytelling—which when done correctly sings like a nightingale in the heart of the reader.

Reinvigoration!

invigorateWhy am I feeling reinvigorated, you ask?

Well, I'm so happy you asked that question!

About 2 years ago I started working on a WIP titled "Genesis Ellipse ...". When the inspiration hit I was completely enamored with the idea of the story and knew that if I struck all of the right cords it would be a story to be reckoned with. Controversial as it may be, I knew that it would be a story the likes of which most had never seen or read, for that matter.

However, what would wind up happening?

I lost my inspiration. :(

Yup! I sure did. Not only did I lose my inspiration, but I got an enormous case of Writers Block. It was the worst thing that could happen.

Funny thing is that I knew exactly why it had happened. It went a little something like this:

  1. I began to stress about the depth of the story. The layers that constituted it were profound and HAD to be executed properly.

  2. I took "a break" from writing the story because I wanted to make sure that I gave myself sufficient time to think through the 'kinks" and make sure that everything melded together properly.

  3. I started to stress because the kinks may have gotten a bit too profound.

  4. Stress turned into depression.

  5. Depression turned into Writers Block.

  6. Writers Block turned into an incomplete story.

It was a terrible thing to endure. I couldn't help but think that maybe I'd bitten off more than I could chew. Maybe I wasn't apt for the challenge. Maybe my skills were simply not cut to carry out such a feat. Maybe, just maybe, I wouldn't be able to make this story come into fruition.

Truthfully, I almost tossed out the idea altogether.

Just recently, and with LOTS AND LOTS of help from my Publishers Mentoring Program, I've restarted working on "Genesis Ellipse ..." and am happy to announce that I've conjured up a plan of action as to how I am going to go about getting this work at the very least finished by the end of this year. Maybe not published, but finishing it alone would be an enormous accomplishment.

So, needless to say, I AM SUPER EXCITED!

Finally my muse is breathing new life into "Genesis Ellipse ...".

When LIFE Happens

All of May, and so far, all of June have proven to be very revealing months.

eyesAlthough, if I were to be completely honest, when New Year 2015 started I knew that something was going to change. I wasn't all too sure what, but I knew that there would be change on the brink of my reality at some point this year.

That change came into fruition May 2015.

A while ago I began to notice things that were happening which commenced to alter my perception of many occurrences in life. Not everything is as it seems—and this has nothing to do with magic. This is life.

dividerChange is nothing new to me. I've been dealing with change—either willing or unwillingly—for many years. However, most of the time I've gone through the motions without acknowledging my own needs, wants or feelings about the matter. I merely coped with it, setting my emotions asides.

Somewhere along the line I learned to cruise through life, putting aside my emotions—I ambled around much of the time like a robot. Doing what I had to do, when I had to do it.

The last eight and a half years proved to be incredibly challenging, albeit not the hardest I've had to endure. However, there were some unexpected things that transpired which depleted my resolve in some ways. Funny enough, they also made it stronger in others.

Sometimes ...

strangeThe years 2011, 2012 and 2014 won 'The Medal for Hard Times' as it pertains to me.

At the end of 2014, I had a very long and interesting conversation with my best friend. It was a reality check, if you will. She told me that I was not being who I was meant to be, that I'd lost myself in translation and that I was much better, but my circumstances were holding me down.

She was right. Very right.

It was at that moment that I told her, "I need this to change. Please help me make it change." Long story short, she did. I don't want to get into too much detail about what happened as that's not the point of this conversation. The point of this conversation was the eye opening experiences that have led me to fruitfulness and felicity.

I'm not a person that requires much. I really don't. I'm not after money or fame, and silver or gold. All I want is peace of mind. Nothing more and nothing less. I work at my fullest capacity of productivity when I am basking in serenity's bosom.

serenityI'd be a proper idiot if I thought that there are never going to be problems in life, however when you are at mental and emotional peace, the storms that life might bring only make you stronger. Yet, if your inner turbulence is more than your inner tranquility, then the storm will demolish you completely.

Here are some lessons that I've learned though life as I've been a first hand witness to them.

keep-calm-i-am-a-survivor--2I've survived:

  • Abuse

  • Neglect

  • Indifference

  • Transgression

  • Bullying

  • Poverty

  • Hunger

  • Sickness

  • Disrespect

  • Rape

  • Low Self-esteem

  • Loss

  • Coping with Dyslexia

  • Being the single parent of a disabled child

  • And too many more hardships to list here.

It certainly has not killed me, but I'd would be lying if I said that it made me stronger. As a matter of fact, it weakened my willpower.

Until that day.

That day, when my best friend gave me a wake up call and in nice words said, "This has to stop! Stop feeling sorry for yourself and do something about it. Can't you see everything that you've overcome! You can do this! YOU HAVE IT IN YOU!"

When she opened my eyes to my inner strength, I opened my mind to the possibilities. She was my conscientiousness, my voice of reason at the most pivotal moment in my life.

changes-coming-2014I said, "You're right! You're absolutely right! I can and WILL do something about this!"

"At'a girl!" (<--paraphrasing) she replied.

And you know what? I've learned some things.

  1. Not everyone you love knows how to love you back.

  2. Sometimes the ones you run to for refuge cannot give it and simply add to your strife.

  3. Listen to those whom TRULY want the best for you.

  4. Find anchorage in them for their strength will make you stronger.

  5. True inner peace comes from knowing you can, even if you sometimes think you can't and loving yourself enough to do what's best for you.

  6. Yes, by all means, give to the people you love, but being a little bit selfish from time to time does not make you a bad person.

  7. Stand up for yourself, and those who love you will stand beside you.

I'm so grateful for the wake up call she gave me. I am so, so thankful. For, had it not been for that, I could not come to you now and wholeheartedly say ...

I AM FREE TO BE, AND MAKE OF MYSELF WHO I WANT TO BE!
